In 2010, new investigations were conducted in Kong Wang Shan. They confirmed the development of the site from the Han period and proposed a direct relation to the developmentin the time of the source of the Taoism but without giving or any explanation for the meaning or the identity of such a large number of characters carved in the rocks.
This book aims at informing the reader so that he can judge of this new interpretation and its relevance, in comparison with the previous Buddhist, then Taoist – let alone Manichean– line of interpretation given after 1980.
However in all hypotheses, almost all the characters of the frieze are dated back to the year 69-70 AD.
